Prior to opening Somm Cellars a mature Faugeres vertical followed me to every restaurant I purchased for. I love the purity and classicism of ’90s and ‘00s bottlings here, doubly so considering how reasonable prices remain.
This is a property with a long history. Production dates to 1619, meaning folks were enjoying Faugeres’s limestone-kissed Merlot before the appearance of Shakespeare’s First Folio. In 1987 the property changed hands in what was to inaugurate the modern era. The wines have numbered with the strongest values on the Right Bank since.
I must have tasted this wine at least a dozen times and sketched ‘very good, more fruit than previous’ in my most recent encounter. Finding full and satisfying fruit profiles on 1995 Right Bank reds tends to come at a much steeper price. Edges this soft, same.
