Six or seven years ago, on a trip to southern Spain, a friend opened this 1992 Haut-Brion. He’d actually opened it earlier that day for his daughter’s birthday (her birth vintage), but she being disinterested we had nearly a full bottle to enjoy over dinner.
The bottle was quintessential Haut-Brion: loads of hickory smoke and spice along with the almost-delicate blonde tobacco note that somehow always elbows into the nose.
If asked to reduce Haut-Brion to a single word I would choose 'defiant.' It is Bordeaux's uncanniest overachiever, a wine with a Captain Ahab-like unwillingness to submit or yield even in the most challenging growing seasons. I've had many illustrative bottles over the years, but this 1992 makes the movie poster.
