Elegant, charming - yet often dilute, underfruited. That’s 1979: a true either/or, and the root of its Jekyll-and-Hyde reputation. The reason to care is that wines on the ‘right side’ of the vintage are among Bordeaux’s most classic (and well priced) mature pleasures. Choose carefully - but do choose.
Is there a better 1979 St.-Julien than Las Cases? Certainly none is purer - sweet red cherries, Satsuma plum - or more compactly concentrated. I love too how positively the wine tracks with air, a larger achievement than that initially sounds considering how fleeting many of the vintage’s wines are today.
End to end an old school pleasure, extra sharp offer pricing included.
Cheers,
Jason
