Absolute smokeshow ‘22s here. And that we thought we'd seen the last of them makes this small parcel of Antoine's seldom-seen Gamay extra fun, particularly with weeknight pricing attached.
The cuvée comes from a little plot of Gamay in Fixin. Hearing Antoine talk through the wine you get the sense he feels especially free and improvisational in his winemaking. The result is a red rendered in a wilder and more spontaneous key than its cellarmates.
The nose leads with ultra-fresh notes of cranberry and wild strawberry along with the delicate natural touches you’ll be expecting. There's just a nip of VA that seems eager to push the fruit and flowers out of their glass.
But the surprise, and a lovely one, is the depth of flavor. Though the nose tunnels a butterfly-in-the-breeze of a wine we’re given a more substantial pleasure. Spicy details give real range to the fruit and with time the ’22 hedonism takes off.
An absolute ace of a Summer red.
