We're recently revisiting many of the 2020 Red Burgs we’d shoved toward the back of our cellars post-release. This shoving had, of course, nothing to do with quality and everything to do with the vintage’s structural ambition. ‘Serious’ has to be its most frequently recruited descriptor, then as now.
Among recent bottles though we’ve discovered a small 2020 subset that is just fascinating. This group shares a certain textural tenderness and succulence that contrasts sharply with the the muscularity of mainline 2020s. Please note that these wines do not call to us with the generic lightness and phantom elegance of early picking. They instead retain the size and dimensions of the vintage but rearrange its parts more persuasively.
Bouley’s 2020 Bourgogne Rouge is a wonderfully fragrant, chipper example. Color and depth, yes, but so too a comparable width of stony, herbaceous complexity. Beautiful energy - and not just ‘for it’s level.’
We’ve long known that quality in 2020 centers more on individual producers than general vintage character. And as the wines evolve they remind us that style, too, is more a door-to-door question than we originally guessed. From Volnay and Pommard.
Cheers,
Jason
