Not sure if ‘secret’ still applies here. Assuming so I’ll nominate Commaraine as perhaps the best kept secret on the Côte. Soft, fragrant, hedonistic reds are the order of the day and perhaps no wine in the cellar illustrates the house style as persuasively as this Nuits ‘Aux Bousselots.’
From 2019 Commaraine has been on the come and the 2021 and 2022 vintages announce arrival rather than mere progress. Proof? At the price they’re almost too good to sell: our team drank nearly half our 2021 allocation ourselves.
In our warming age purity is often sacrificed at the altar of ‘richness,’ a trade few of us can be happy with. Burgundy’s vanguard go on unburdening us with the need to choose between them. Repeating that most of this vanguard comes backed with staggeringly steep prices is the usual response. More helpful (and fun!) to remind ourselves that there are still rising stars to catch, and before-they-were-famous prices our reward for the effort.
